Beagle TrainingSuccessful beagle training starts with the method of positive reinforcement. This type of dog training is by far the most widely used and accepted methods when you discuss the topic with dog experts. Essentially positive reinforcement is the act of rewarding any desired behavior that you want to beagle to perform and to ignore all other behaviors.

You see, it is in a dog’s nature to please you. When positive reinforcement is used at the time of the action, a beagle puppy will associate the action with a reward. This in turn solidifies the command and behavior bonding in the dog’s brain.

If you force the action upon them such as pushing their hips down to “sit” then not only can you hurt the dog (especially with breeds easily susceptible to hip dysplasia) but they don’t know if you want to be pushing their hips or if you want them to sit… it just gets confusing for them.

Ways To Make Beagle Training Easier:

If you are going to reward when doing beagle training, then be sure that it is a meaningful reward to the dog. A pat on the head and simply saying “good dog” just wont cut it. It is fine to do, but it is not a strong enough of an incentive to keep them interested for very long periods. You must use what experts sometimes call “primary incentives”. This type of reward is something to which your beagle will have a powerful response. It might be food, it might be a favorite toy, it might just be a five second game of tug-of-war or a loving scratch behind the ear.

Beagle training is all about timing. When a dog performs the action you desire, you must mark that moment exactly so that they begin to associate the command with the behavior.

Some people use a click from a clicker training to do this. Personally I use a verbal marker. You might try “good” or “yes” to designate as the obedience marker for doing a behavior. Then you can give your beagle the reward. Actually I usually say “OK” after the marker to let them know the command is over and then give them a treat. This allows you to do multiple commands later and until you say “OK” (or another release word you designate) they are still obliged to be alert for more commands.  This type of action is good for anything ranging from “sit” to potty training.

Which now leads us to talk about your command terms. The word itself doesn’t really matter when puppy training. They don’t understand English, or any other language except within the context which they are trained. You could say “bowl” for the command requesting the behavior to sit, but it is best to make the terms relative to your thoughts. This leads to the second significant command rule in beagle training- be consistent. Always use the same command word for the same action. And you must use it every time. So don’t say “get down” then “off” and later “no jumping” for the same behavior.

How To Deal With Beagle Barking

All dogs will bark from time to time. It is a natural thing for them to use their own voice and they use it from any reasons. Beagle’s barking partially stem from the fact that they are hound dog that was originally bred for hunting. They use their voice to let their masters know when they are on a scent, and because they can run so much faster than a human, they also bark to let you know where they are on a hunt. But beyond this their voice can help you know if they have been startled, if they have to go out, if they have seen someone sneaking in the back door, etc.

Sometimes these are good barking behaviors and other times it can get out of control. This is where good beagle training comes into play.  Training beagles is not about stopping the barking, just controlling when.

Owners often bring about the barking issues themselves. For instance, has your dog been barking outside and in order to stop them from getting the neighbors a riled up at you, you brought your beagle inside? Guess what, you just gave reinforcement for the barking behavior. They barked, you let them in. Oops- your fault.

What about this. Have you ever been sitting in your chair and your beagle brings a ball to play with and barks to get you to through it? And did you? If you did, then you just gave positive reinforcement for the barking behavior. Oops again! This beagle training stuff can be pretty subtle can’t it?

Did you know that not only by throwing the ball not only did you reinforce the barking but you also let them be the alpha. They controlled the situation. They have become the master. This is a very slippery slope and can lead to beagle training difficulties later on. So, you must focus on being the alpha, the pack leader, so that your puppy learns to respect and obey your commands. You can learn more about that in the Secrets to Dog Training Guide.

How to Choose Your Beagle’s Veterinarian

beagle & veterinarian

Most people don’t just go take their beagle puppies to a vet that they find in the phone book, or in this day and age found on Google. Being in close proximity does have its benefits, however most people find their veterinarian via word of mouth. Someone they know already takes their pet to this specific doctor, and if they trust them, why shouldn’t you? This is by far one of the best ways to find a good vet.

The veterinarian is a significant person in your life when you have beagle dogs. For the most part, hopefully, you will only be going to see the vet for regular beagle health check ups. But should anything more imperative occur, having a good relationship with your veterinarian makes thing much less frustrating.

Beagle House Training Problems

First and foremost, if you are having beagle potty training problems, be sure to pay a visit to your veterinarian to be sure there are no underlying health problems . Next, we need to figure out the root of the problem. To do this we need to isolate the situation of when the problem is likely to happen so you can focus your beagle training.

Here are a few occasions that are common situations when a beagle is liable to urinate in the house:

  • You arrive home after a long days work and they are so excited they pee on the floor
  • Guest show up for a visit and the dog goes potty on the rug
  • There is a loud argument between members of the household
  • There are loud noises like thunder or fireworks in the area.

What do these all have in common? They are all due to excitement or fear (just a type of excitement really). Now, how do we address these beagle puppy training issues?

Limiting water intake prior to an event such as one of those described above can help mitigate potty problems. Obviously you shouldn’t restrict their drinking of water all day long. But for those times when you are about to have a guest or if a storm is rolling in, just be mindful of the water intake.

When you get home, or a guest arrives then be sure that the greeting is very calm and mellow. This will prevent a build up of excitement.

There are other types of house breaking problems beyond just excitement. Scent marking for instance is the first that comes to mind. There are many techniques to use when beagle training that will help with house breaking a puppy or even an older dog.

If you have a good relationship with your veterinarian to dig out any health problems, and you slip into the role of alpha pack leader while maintaining positive reinforcement, your beagle training should go smoothly. These are only key factors you should consider when attempting to train your dog. Check out the beagle training guide for more detailed and defined advice and tips.
